The Oklahoma Parent Information and Resource Center (OK PIRC) Summer Reading Program (SRP) encourages summer reading and support of local library programs. This program is a viable method of assisting the learning process by bridging reading and the loss that would have occurred. We provide teachers, schools and community organizations with the opportunity to enhance student achievement by supplying books and resources.   There are several benefits for students reading throughout the summer such as improvement in comprehension, reading, writing and spelling.

The OK PIRC SRP was victorious in putting books into the hands of over 5,000 children from 2009 through 2011.  For 2011, there will be a distribution of over 2,100 items. The SRP packets contained information relevant to parents and teachers of which we encourage to share.

Thank you to all participants and partners ~ OK PIRC to the successful distribution of over 5,000 new books to students.  In 2009, Michael Owens of Ralph Ellison Library was helpful in signing up 1,200 in their reading program for the summer. Owens’ staff was helpful in selecting quality books for the students to read. Thank you to Donna Durbin of Waldenbooks in Penn Square Mall for books and material donated from the book drive and a sad farewell as they close their doors permanently. They gave book drives, purchasing discounts and multiple donations over the years.

QUOTES FROM PARTICIPANTS
"I attended the OKPIRC Training for Action Team Partnerships May 13, 2009. I would recommend this training to any school from the state of Oklahoma. It is very informative and can only be a big part of success for our state. The Parent Resource Room at Douglass is awesome. And when they say they provide technical assistance with the plan, they mean it."  ~~Anna King, President-elect, OK State PTA
"I found the training to be very in-depth. It really prepared you for the development of the action plan. Something that could have been hard and complicated was streamlined in an efficient way. And the Parent Resource room – it is just a WOW factor."  ~~Orienthia Holmes, Parent Facilitator, Webster Middle School
"The training was good- very good. The OK PIRC has been extremely helpful with the technical assistance for the action plan and follow- through. We are very excited about the Parent Resource Room. The whole process exceeded our expectations!"   ~~Pedro Martinez, Assistant Principal, CHHS

Governor Brad Henry Proclaims October as
“PARENT INVOLVEMENT MONTH”
Oklahoma City, OK, October 1, 2008:  The Oklahoma Parent Information and Resource Center (OK PIRC) has partnered with the Oklahoma Congress of Parents and Teachers (OK PTA) to promote “Parent Involvement Month”. Signed into proclamation by Governor Brad Henry September 2, 2008, the month of October is now designated as Parent Involvement Month. The goal of Parent Involvement Month is to increase awareness of the need for parents to be more involved in their child’s education and to become an active partner with their child’s teachers and school as their involvement is crucial to the future success of their child. To that end, OK PIRC and OK PTA have created a Parent Involvement Month Calendar and a Parent Involvement Checklist targeted to parents and teachers to increase parent-school partnerships to be distributed to schools statewide. OK PIRC is a statewide technical assistance and training center whose mission is to build partnerships between schools and families to increase student achievement and parental engagement, birth to high school. The success of Oklahoma’s children depends on the strength of the partnership between parents and schools.

For more information about parent involvement, technical assistance and support, please contact the OK PIRC at (405) 478-4078 or the OK PTA at (405) 681-0750.
